The Long and Winding Tree of Olive Maloon Cilley, Carmel & Waterville, Maine, 1890s

"Gram Brown's sister Olive Maloone"

Almost ten years ago now, I wrote a blog post about a baby picture of Lottie Brown that had the most complicated set of family relationships I've encountered here on FPR. Revisit that one here to see what I mean.

One name that kept popping up when researching the little girl was Olive Maloon, who was probably her aunt. I don't know why I didn't catch on then, but I just discovered a photograph of Olive in my collection. Olive's dress, particularly the tight sleeves, peaked shoulders and a hairstyle with frizzy curls that frame her face points to a date of around 1890-1892.

The photographer was Ferdinand Cortez Nealey who operated studios in Brooks and Winterport, Maine at the time this photograph was taken. Someone has written, "Gram Brown's sister Olive Maloone," on the back of the cabinet card.

Olive was born in Carmel, Maine in June of 1872 to James Albert Maloon and Alice E. Conant Maloon. Olive had two sisters, Ida Mae, born in 1874 and Ora Jenny, in 1880. Ida married twice, first to William Cassidy in 1888, and then to the widower Joseph Edward Brown in 1899. Perhaps the mystery child in my previous post was the daughter of Joseph and Jenny. Olive worked as a shop girl prior to her marriage to Shederick W. Cilley, a press-cutter. The couple had seven children in their household: Valeria, b. 1906; Clarence, b. 1891; Merle, b. 1901; Edna, b. 1914; Alice Brown, b 1896; Clyde, b. 1904; and Raymond, b. 1910. If you had a close read of the comments section in the earlier post, we learned that Clarence may have been adopted. I suspect Alice may also be an adoptee.

Olive died in 1948 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville, Maine. If you have Olive in your tree, and you'd like to share more about her life, I'd love to hear from you.
